Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, while table tennis experienced the most significant growth. By contrast, participation in amateur dramatics declined substantially. Musical performances, meanwhile, emerged as a new activity and attracted an increasing number of participants.

In 2000, the film club had approximately 64 participants, considerably more than martial arts (36) and amateur dramatics (26). Table tennis was less popular, with around 16 participants, while musical performances had no participants. The number attending the film club fell slightly to 60 in 2010 before recovering to about 66 by 2020.

Participation in martial arts fluctuated between roughly 32 and 38 participants, ending at around 36 in 2020. Table tennis, however, rose dramatically from 16 participants in 2000 to 54 in 2020, overtaking martial arts by 2015. In contrast, amateur dramatics increased slightly to 28 in 2005 before falling steadily to just 6 participants in 2020. Musical performances grew from zero to approximately 18 participants over the same period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully and accurately addresses all parts of the task. The student selects and reports the main features of the line graph while making relevant and meaningful comparisons throughout. The overview paragraph successfully captures the general trends, such as the film club remaining the most popular activity and table tennis experiencing significant growth. Specific data points, such as 'approximately 64 participants' for the film club in 2000 and the rise of table tennis to '54 in 2020', are used effectively to support the description without unnecessary listing of every single detail. The information is well-selected, fully developed, and entirely relevant, aligning strongly with the Band 8 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically by categories and timeframes, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of trends. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and well-structured body paragraphs detailing the specific data. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'meanwhile', 'however', and 'over the same period' are used flexibly and accurately to link sentences and ideas. Referencing is consistently clear, contributing to a seamless reading experience that meets the criteria for an 8.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student displays a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. Less common lexical items are used skilfully to describe trends and changes, such as 'experienced the most significant growth', 'declined substantially', 'fluctuated', and 'rose dramatically'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise and natural. While there are no noticeable lexical errors or inappropriate collocations, the vocabulary is slightly standard rather than exceptionally sophisticated, which places this firmly at a strong Band 7.5 to 8.0 range. The effective handling of descriptive verbs and adverbs warrants a solid Band 7.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writer uses a wide variety of complex sentence structures with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, and clauses are combined smoothly using subordinate structures and participial phrases (e.g., 'while table tennis experienced the most significant growth', 'overtaking martial arts by 2015'). Control of grammar and punctuation is strong throughout, with only occasional minor imperfections that do not impede communication. The grammatical range comfortably satisfies the criteria for an 8.0 band score, showing good control over complex arrangements of time, figures, and comparative structures.
