Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, identifying several activities such as the Film club, Amateur dramatics, and Table tennis, and includes some initial and final figures (e.g., 'Started with around 15 and ended with 55 participants'). However, there are significant weaknesses in overview and data selection. The introduction is repetitive, with the first two paragraphs largely restating the same information, and the essay lacks a clear, cohesive overall summary of the main trends. Additionally, some data points are vague or lack precision, and the final concluding paragraph simply repeats the introduction rather than synthesizing the main trends. Therefore, the response fulfills the basic requirements but lacks full development and organisation of ideas, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The organisation of the essay is heavily fragmented. The text is broken into very short, single-sentence paragraphs that fail to develop unified themes or logical progression. For example, paragraphs two and three isolate individual details without smooth transitions or a clear structural flow ('Coming to Table tennis its had huge increase...'). Cohesive devices are either missing, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as 'Secondly' used out of sequence or abrupt shifts between sentences. Paragraphing is not used effectively to structure the response, and referencing is sometimes unclear, leading to a disjointed reading experience that aligns closely with Band 4.5 to 5.0 descriptors; a score of 5.0 is awarded.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary. Phrases like 'illustrates information on the numbers of participants' and 'different activities' are repeated multiple times throughout the response. There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'tennuis' for tennis, 'intially' for initially, 'dratiscally' for drastically, and 'Flim' for Film. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are hindered by poor control over spelling and collocation (e.g., 'participants had Rise and fall'). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic topic references, the frequency of errors places this firmly in the Band 5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural errors and awkward phrasing. Examples include 'The graphs illustrates the information', 'its had huge increase', and 'Musical performances activity also has drastically increased the number of participants but Musical performances started from the year 2005.' There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The graphs illustrates', 'its had'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional use. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are frequently faulty. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5 criteria.
