Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line chart illustrates number of participation at one social center in Melbourne, Australia over the period 2000 to 2020 across five activites: film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances.

Overall, participation for film club had the largest figure among all five activies over the period. Number of participants in playing table tennis had significant growth over the years, whereas people who participate in musical performances decline sharply over the same period.

According to what is shown, film club's participants changed much less and remained stable at 60-70 participants over the years. Similarly, the number of participants in martial arts remained at a range of 30-40 participants a year. Howerver, the number of participants in table tennis increased sharply from 16 participants in 2000 to 54 participants in 2020. The number of participants in musical performances rose gradually to reach its peak at almost 20 participants in 2020.

In contrast, the number of participants in amateur dramatics declined dramatically from 29 participants in 2005 to reach its lowest point at 8 participants only in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph, making appropriate comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant position of the film club and contrasting trends in table tennis and musical performances. Key data points are cited accurately, such as the film club remaining stable between 60 and 70, and table tennis rising from 16 in 2000 to 54 in 2020. The response meets all task requirements effectively, though a slightly deeper synthesis of the overall trends could elevate it further. Overall, the task is well-executed and satisfies Band 7 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with a helpful introduction, followed by a general overview, and then details specific trends in subsequent body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data, such as stable activities versus those experiencing significant growth or decline. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, for instance using 'Overall', 'Similarly', 'However', and 'In contrast' to guide the reader through the comparisons. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally a bit mechanical, which keeps the response at Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to trends such as 'significant growth', 'remain stable', 'increased sharply', and 'declined dramatically'. There are, however, some minor spelling and lexical errors, such as 'activites' instead of 'activities', and phrasing like 'participation for film club had the largest figure' which sounds slightly unnatural. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with reasonable precision and flexibility, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and adverbial phrases of time and manner (e.g., 'over the period 2000 to 2020 across five activites', 'whereas people who participate in musical performances decline sharply'). There are some noticeable grammatical errors, such as the missing article in 'illustrates number of participation' and tense inconsistency in 'people who participate... decline sharply' (should be past tense or consistent present). Punctuation is generally fine, but punctuation or preposition slips keep the accuracy below Band 7. The frequency of errors does not impede communication.
