Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line chart illustrates the number of participation at one social center in Melbourne, Australia over the period 2000 to 2020 across five activities: film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances.
Overall, participation for film club had the largest figure among all five activities over the period. Number of participants in playing table tennis had significant growth over the years, whereas people who participate in musical performances declined sharply over the same period.
According to what is shown, film club's participants changed much less and remained stable at 60-70 participants over the years. Similarly, the number of participants in martial arts remained at a range of 30-40 participants a year. However, the number of participants in table tennis increased sharply from 16 participants in 2000 to 54 participants in 2020. The number of participants in musical performances rose gradually to reach its peak at almost 20 participants in 2020.
In contrast, the number of participants in amateur dramatics declined dramatically from 29 participants in 2005 to reach its lowest point at 8 participants only in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of the line chart and making appropriate comparisons across the five activities. The overview clearly highlights the dominant category (film club) as well as the significant growth in table tennis and the steep decline in musical performances and amateur dramatics. Specific data points are correctly cited, such as the rise of table tennis from 16 in 2000 to 54 in 2020. Although there is a minor misreading regarding the starting point of amateur dramatics in 2005 (stating 29 instead of approximately 28), the overall task response is well-developed and meets all requirements of the band descriptors for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, starting with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then detailing specific trends in body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used adequately and logically, such as 'Overall,' 'Similarly,' 'However,' and 'In contrast.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data. While the referencing is generally clear and easy to follow, slightly more flexible integration of data points would elevate the cohesion further. Overall, the structure effectively guides the reader through the visual data, aligning well with Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suited to the task, incorporating appropriate reporting language such as 'illustrates,' 'significant growth,' 'declined sharply,' and 'reach its peak.' There are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'number of participation' in the opening sentence instead of 'number of participants.' Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of collocation and style ('remained stable,' 'declined dramatically'). Although vocabulary is somewhat repetitive in sentence openings ('The number of participants...'), the range is sufficient for precision and clarity, comfortably earning a Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'over the period 2000 to 2020 across five activities' and 'whereas people who participate in musical performances declined sharply'). Grammatical accuracy is generally good, though there are minor slips such as 'number of participation' (noun form error) and tense inconsistencies in minor places. Punctuation is accurate, and errors do not impede communication. The majority of sentences are clear and well-structured, placing this response solidly in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
