Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the graph, such as the upward trend in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are several inaccurate data points and omissions. For example, the student states that table tennis started at around 15 and rose to 35 in 2020 (whereas the actual figures are 16 and 54), and incorrectly claims that musical performances grew from 11 in 2005 (the graph shows 0 until 2010). Furthermore, the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 121 words, which imposes a strict ceiling on this criterion under official guidelines.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay attempts a basic structure, including an introductory sentence and an overview paragraph. However, the organisation is hindered by very short, choppy paragraphs and poor logical progression. Cohesive devices are minimal or mechanically applied, such as 'Whereas' used inappropriately at the start of a sentence ('Whereas, amateur dramatics shows decrease...'). Referencing is also confusing at times, as seen in the final paragraph ('Turning to film club and matial arts its figure was initially...'). Paragraphing is disjointed and does not effectively guide the reader through the data comparisons.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent word choice and collocation errors. Examples include 'information reached of participants', 'public centre' instead of social centre, and 'shows decrease significantly'. There are also spelling errors such as 'matial arts' and 'remaind'. While the student attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'participants' and 'activities', the limited range and frequent inaccuracies constrain the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or comparative structures are frequently flawed, such as 'table tennis illustrates the upward trends compared with amateur dramatics followed the opposite pattern.' There are notable tense inconsistencies and verb-form errors, including 'it has remaind' and 'rose 35 in 2020' (missing the preposition 'to'). Frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
