Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to report the main features of the graph, mentioning several activities such as the film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances. However, the response fails to adopt a standard Academic Task 1 format, incorporating strange structural headings like 'Year 2000' and 'Year 2020' rather than an integrated overview and body paragraphs. Furthermore, there are several data inaccuracies and vague approximations (e.g. stating martial arts participants remain constant between '3 to 40' instead of around 35 to 38, and misreading the start of musical performances). The overview is weak and lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the overall trends. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, earning a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is heavily fragmented with unconventional section headers ('Summary for Activities', 'Year 2000', 'Year 2020') rather than a standard, flowing report structure. Paragraphing is disjointed, with single-sentence blocks that disrupt the logical flow of ideas. While there are some basic cohesive devices used (e.g. 'on the other hand', 'while'), referencing is sometimes mechanical or confusing, and overall progression is lacking. The rigid division of the text into discrete time-stamps impedes a smooth, coherent comparison across the two-decade span. This meets the criteria for a band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary suitable for the task, such as 'participants', 'activities', 'increase', and 'decrease'. There are noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as 'percipients' instead of 'participants', 'summaries' instead of 'summarise', and awkward phrasing like 'non Musical performances taken place'. Less common lexical items are attempted with frequent inaccuracy. While the reader can generally deduce the intended meaning, the lexical control is weak, justifying a band score of 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and awkwardly structured complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies (e.g., mixing past reference with present verbs like 'remain' and 'increases'), missing articles, and malformed clauses (e.g., 'after two decades, Film club participants remain high in number around 60 to 70 while other varies'). Punctuation is also problematic, with lower-case beginnings for sentences and awkward line breaks. These recurring errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader, aligning with a band score of 5.0.
