Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph regarding participant numbers at the social centre between 2000 and 2020. However, there are significant issues with accuracy and task execution. The student notes key trends such as the rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, but also includes numerous inaccuracies, such as claiming that musical performances started in 2005 and 'still rising throught out all these period' when the graph shows a peak and then a slight dip, or misinterpreting film club and martial arts trends. Furthermore, the overview is repetitive and lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the overall trends. This performance aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive statements and poor cohesion. The student restates points multiple times across the body paragraphs and the overview without adding new insight (e.g., repeating information about musical performances and table tennis across paragraphs). Cohesive devices are minimal and often mechanical or inaccurate ('Initially', 'On the other hand', 'And at last'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure lacks clear progression, leading to a confusing read. This reflects Band 4.5 to 5.0 characteristics, warranting a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'boost', 'rise', 'drop', and 'stable'. There are numerous word choice errors, spelling mistakes ('ilustrates', 'amatur', 'tenis', 'armateur'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'show up and down', 'try to maintain its place'). The range of vocabulary is limited and inadequate for a flexible discussion of data trends, though communication of the general subject matter is partially achieved. This meets the criteria for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at complex or compound sentences frequently contain errors, such as missing subjects, incorrect prepositions, and severe subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The film club remain', 'The table tenis participants have a boost...and the musical performances start...and boost'). Punctuation is also faulty, with missing spaces after commas and periods. Errors are frequent and often cause strain for the reader, fitting the Band 4 descriptor well.
