The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, it is evident that participation in martial arts and the film club remained relatively stable throughout the period, while table tennis and musical performances saw considerable growth. Amateur dramatics, by contrast, experienced a sharp and sustained decline.
In 2000, around 64 people took part in the film club, and this figure stayed broadly stable despite a slight dip to approximately 60 in 2010, before recovering to about 66 by the end of the period. Participation in martial arts fluctuated only modestly, ranging between roughly 32 and 38 throughout, and finishing close to where it started at around 36 in 2020.
Table tennis, however, showed considerable growth. Starting at just 16 participants in 2000, numbers rose gradually to around 20 by 2010, before increasing sharply to approximately 53 by 2020 overtaking martial arts along the way. Amateur dramatics moved in the opposite direction, falling steadily from about 26 participants to a mere 6 over the same period. Musical performances had no participants at all until 2010, after which numbers climbed steadily to reach around 18 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear and comprehensive summary of the visual data. The response features an effective overview in the second paragraph that captures the main trends across the five activities without getting bogged down in unnecessary numbers. Key features are accurately reported and supported by specific figures from the graph, such as the initial and final numbers for the film club and table tennis, and the notable absence of musical performances until 2010. Comparisons are made effectively, such as noting that table tennis overtook martial arts and that amateur dramatics moved in the opposite direction. The data is accurately represented throughout, meeting all requirements for Band 8.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised and flows smoothly from introduction to overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs that group information logically. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'Overall, it is evident', 'while', 'by contrast', and 'however'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct and clear function in structuring the report. Referencing throughout the text is clear and unambiguous, ensuring the reader easily follows the comparisons between different activities over the 20-year span. Progression is clear and logical throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a wide and natural lexical resource suitable for an academic task. Less common vocabulary items and functional phrases are used skillfully and with good awareness of collocation, such as 'remained relatively stable', 'considerable growth', 'sharp and sustained decline', and 'fluctuated only modestly'. Word choice and spelling are entirely accurate throughout the response. The vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meanings regarding trends and fluctuations without any awkward phrasing or repetition, easily achieving a Band 8 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response features a wide range of complex grammatical structures used with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. Sentences containing dependent clauses, participial phrases, and prepositional modifiers (e.g., 'Starting at just 16 participants in 2000, numbers rose gradually...') are handled with ease. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and any complex structures attempted are well-controlled and grammatically sound. Punctuation is accurate throughout, contributing to the overall fluency and readability of the report.
