The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The line chart provides information about the number of participants in five different social activities at a centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the majority of people participated in the film club. The number of film club members remained relatively stable, while the figure for martial arts also fluctuated slightly. In contrast, both table tennis and musical performances showed an upward trend, whereas participation in amateur dramatics declined considerably.
The film club accounted for the highest number of participants throughout the period, with approximately 60 people or more. The figure decreased gradually from around 64 participants in 2000 to 60 in 2010, before rising to approximately 66 in 2020. Similarly, the number of people participating in martial arts fluctuated, falling from about 36 in 2000 to 32 in 2005, then increasing to 38 in 2010. It subsequently declined slightly to 34 in 2015 before reaching around 36 participants in 2020.
The number of musical performances rose from 0 participants in 2000 and 2005 to approximately 12 in 2010 and 18 in 2020. Table tennis also experienced a significant increase, from about 16 participants in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and 2010, before rising sharply to 36 in 2015 and 54 in 2020. Amateur dramatics, on the other hand, showed the opposite trend. After increasing slightly from 26 to 28 participants between 2000 and 2005, the figure fell steadily to 20 in 2010, 14 in 2015 and only 6 in 2020
