Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of people participating in five different activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia, over a 20-year period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, while table tennis experienced the most substantial growth. In contrast, participation in amateur dramatics declined considerably, whereas martial arts fluctuated slightly and musical performances attracted an increasing number of attendees.
In 2000, the film club had approximately 65 participants, considerably more than martial arts, at around 35. Although its membership fell gradually to about 60 in 2010, it subsequently recovered and reached roughly 65 participants by 2020. Martial arts followed a relatively stable pattern, fluctuating between approximately 30 and 40 participants over the period and ending at around 35.
The remaining activities showed more noticeable changes. Table tennis started with only about 15 participants in 2000 and rose modestly to 20 in 2010. However, its popularity increased sharply thereafter, reaching approximately 35 participants in 2015 and 55 by 2020, making it the second most popular activity. Musical performances, which had no participants at the beginning of the period, were introduced in 2005 and experienced steady growth, reaching around 20 attendees in 2020. By contrast, amateur dramatics declined from approximately 25 participants in 2000 to just 5 by the end of the period, despite a slight increase in 2005.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has fully satisfied the requirements of Task 1 by providing a well-structured summary that covers all major trends and features of the visual data. The overview clearly highlights the key patterns, noting that the film club was consistently the most popular, table tennis saw substantial growth, and amateur dramatics declined significantly. The body paragraphs effectively report specific data points, such as the film club starting at approximately 64 participants and table tennis rising sharply to 54 by 2020. The figures cited closely match the reference data, and accurate comparisons are made throughout the response. The response is fully developed without any irrelevant or missing details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a clear and logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the overall summary and detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively, separating the overview and the categorized details logically. Cohesive devices are managed skilfully and naturally, such as 'In contrast', 'whereas', and 'subsequently', without feeling mechanical or overused. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly, ensuring that the relationships between different activities and timeframes remain completely clear to the reader throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The student employs a wide and natural range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Less common lexical items are used effectively and accurately, such as 'substantial growth', 'fluctuated slightly', and 'followed a relatively stable pattern'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, as seen in phrases like 'attracted an increasing number of attendees' and 'popularity increased sharply'. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors, demonstrating a high degree of lexical control that easily aligns with Band 8 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response features a wide range of complex structures used with a high level of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the writer demonstrates good control over tense usage, subordination, and prepositional phrases, as exemplified by structures like 'Musical performances, which had no participants at the beginning of the period, were introduced in 2005...'. Punctuation is accurate, and punctuation errors are virtually non-existent. The grammatical range supports fluent and precise communication of complex data relationships.
