Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, providing an overview and mentioning most of the categories such as the film club, table tennis, musical performances, martial arts, and amateur dramatics. However, there are numerous inaccuracies in reporting specific data points and trends. For example, the student claims that musical performances and table tennis showed a 'dramatic increase' from zero, which is partially true for table tennis (growing from 16 to 54), but musical performances actually started at zero in 2000 and 2005 before appearing in 2010. Furthermore, there are awkward phrasing issues like 'figure of competitors' instead of participants. While the response presents an overview and main features, the imprecise data reporting and under-development of comparisons place this at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The text is divided into four paragraphs, following a logical layout with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Cohesive devices and transition markers are attempted, such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or confusing, as seen in sentences like 'But by passing years musical performances and table tennis shows dramatically increase'. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate for an academic report, but the mechanical nature of the cohesion and occasional awkward tracking of ideas prevent the response from reaching Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but adequate vocabulary for the task, attempting some topic-specific and comparative terms such as 'fluctuation', 'downward trend', and 'participants'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward collocations, and misspellings throughout the text, including 'figure of competitors' (instead of participants), 'matrial arts' (spelling error), 'envolved' (spelling error), and 'peopl'. Vocabulary repetition is also evident, with words like 'shows', 'rise', and 'increase' overused. These errors cause some distraction and occasionally strain the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is quite low. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'Film club, table tennis, musical performances shows' and 'musical performances and table tennis shows'. Other structural errors include 'the numbers of participants in film club at highest position around about 64' and missing articles or prepositions. While the meaning is generally decipherable, the frequency of basic grammatical errors restricts the score to a Band 5.0.
