Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover all parts of the prompt by describing the main trends and data points for the five activities shown in the line graph. An overview is attempted in the introduction and conclusion, noting growth, decline, and consistency across the 20-year period. However, the response contains several inaccuracies in reading the data, such as claiming musical performances started with 0 in 2005 (the graph starts in 2000 at zero) and stating amateur dramatics dropped to 5 participants (it drops to approximately 6). While key features are selected, the overall data reporting lacks precision, placing this response at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs for individual activities, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor punctuation, a lack of capitalization, and weak cohesive devices. Sentences are often awkwardly linked using basic connectors like 'than' (instead of 'then') or run together without proper punctuation. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical, leading to a choppy reading experience. This aligns with a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts some less common vocabulary relevant to data description, such as 'signifcant growth', 'exprienced decline', 'drametically rise', and 'sustantial decline'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('walil', 'paticipated', 'resituate', 'amateure', 'durtion', 'nuber', 'cosistant', 'gredually', 'conclution', 'a,atute'), incorrect word forms ('participative' instead of 'participation', 'trand' instead of 'trend'), and basic word choice errors. The vocabulary is adequate to convey the general message, but heavy spelling and form errors cap the score at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak throughout. There is a total absence of capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and for proper nouns ('melbourne ,australia'). Run-on sentences and comma splices are common, such as in 'walil some activities note signifcant growth and some exprienced decline, and some remain consistent .' Verb tense usage is inconsistent when referring to past trends. Due to frequent grammatical and punctuation errors that occasionally impede smooth reading, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
