Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the line graph. An overview is provided, noting the general upward trend in most activities and the significant decline in amateur dramatics. Key features, such as the film club consistently recording the highest participation numbers and table tennis experiencing a dramatic surge after 2010, are clearly highlighted and supported with data from the chart. The response is accurate in its reporting of the figures and effectively compares the different categories, meeting the requirements of Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation, moving from an introductory statement and general overview into body paragraphs detailing specific activities and trends. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'The graph shows that', and 'Lastly'. However, paragraphing could be structured more effectively, as the current layout results in a slightly fragmented sequence of short paragraphs. Reference words and logical connectors are generally well managed, ensuring overall coherence throughout the text, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'participants', 'gradually', 'peak', 'dramatically', and 'interest'. There are some spelling and lexical inaccuracies, notably 'flim club' instead of 'film club', 'deacade' instead of 'decade', and 'increaded' instead of 'increased'. While attempts are made to use less common vocabulary like 'significantly' and 'dramatically', these minor slips prevent the piece from achieving a higher band. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, fitting Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., 'while, the amount of participants and players in table tennis dramatically increased after year 2010'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'number of participants in different activities including flim club' (missing articles) and 'amount of participants' instead of 'number of participants'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.
