Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The candidate has fully satisfied the requirements of Task 1 by providing a well-structured and comprehensive summary of the visual data. The response successfully covers all five activities across the given timeframe. An appropriate and clear overview is provided, highlighting the main trends such as the consistent popularity of the film club, the dramatic growth of table tennis, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the introduction of musical performances. Key data points are accurately cited to support the descriptions, such as table tennis rising from 16 to 54 and the film club ending at 66 participants. There is no irrelevant information, and all comparisons are logically drawn and factually correct based on the provided chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised, with a clear progression from the introductory statement to the overview, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs detailing the specific data. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively without being obtrusive, as seen in transition markers like 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'By 2010', and 'Meanwhile'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from detailed year-by-year breakdowns. Referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring the reader can easily follow the relationships between different data points and time periods.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary used is varied and appropriate for an academic report, incorporating precise terms related to graphical data and trends. The candidate successfully employs less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'significant growth', 'experienced the most significant growth', 'fell considerably', and 'grew steadily'. Word choices and collocations are generally accurate and natural, contributing to a smooth reading experience. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, demonstrating flexible control over the lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a wide range of structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses ('which had no participants in 2000 and 2005', 'whereas martial arts reached a peak'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the candidate shows strong control over tense usage when referring to past years and trends spanning 2000 to 2020. Punctuation is accurate, aiding readability. Only very occasional minor slips might occur, but grammatical accuracy is consistently high throughout the entire text.
