Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The candidate covers all main parts of the task by reporting key features and making comparisons across the categories. The overview correctly identifies the film club as the highest participant group throughout and notes general trends. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data: for instance, the text states that musical performances finished with 'roughly 20 participants' when the graph shows it at approximately 18, and Amateur dramatics finished at 6, not 0. Furthermore, some data points like Martial arts having '35 or 40 participants' are slightly vague. Despite these minor discrepancies and generalisations, the response fulfills the basic requirements of an academic report by giving a clear summary of the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction and an overall overview. There is a logical progression of ideas overall, moving from general trends to specific details about individual activities. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical or faulty (e.g., 'Following this, Martial arts remain constant', 'Moreover, drastic downwards trend'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between sentences can feel abrupt. Logical relationships between ideas are maintained adequately, but clearer signposting and smoother linking would elevate the organizational quality of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though it contains several noticeable spelling and word choice errors (e.g., 'activites', 'throught', 'flim', 'coniderable rose', 'reamins'). The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'significant fluctuations', 'drastic downwards trend', and 'considerable rose', but these attempts are marred by inaccurate spelling and incorrect grammatical forms (e.g., 'rose' used as a noun where 'rise' is required). While communication of the general data points is not severely hindered, the frequency of lexical errors places this response firmly in the Band 5.5 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which remained highest in the entire period') and temporal clauses. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'In,2000 Flim club was', 'Martial arts remain constant in the entire periods', and 'which was decreased'. Commas are sometimes misplaced or missing. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
