Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the activities shown in the line graph, providing an overview and mentioning specific data points such as the figures for table tennis, amateur dramatics, martial arts, and film club. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that in 2000 there were '17 participants participate in table tennis' (actual value is 16), '27 participants participate in amateur dramatics' (actual value is 26), and '38 participants participate in martial arts' (correct). Furthermore, the overview is extremely basic and lacks a clear summary of the overall trends, such as the dramatic rise of table tennis versus the steep decline of amateur dramatics. This places the response within Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into rudimentary paragraphs, but the overall structure is disjointed. The introduction and overview blur together, and the second body paragraph relies heavily on repetitive sentence openings ('In table tennis activity...', 'in amateur dramatics activity...', 'in martial art activity...'). Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, and frequently misused, such as 'Furthermore, We can compare all of them on the behalf of number of participants'. Paragraphing is inadequate, as the text lacks a clear logical progression and feels more like a list of fragmented observations than a cohesive academic report. These weaknesses correspond to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling mistakes ('infomation', 'activites', 'increament', 'partcipate', 'though'). The student heavily overuses words like 'participate' and 'participants' throughout the response. While there are a few attempts at less common vocabulary phrases (e.g., 'huge increament', 'huge decrease'), these are marred by inaccurate word forms and spelling errors. The lexical range is limited and barely adequate to convey the basic message of the graph. This performance aligns with Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences strung together with commas or run-on structures. There are numerous basic grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('this graph illustrate', 'this graph showing'), tense inconsistencies, and missing articles or prepositions. Complex sentence structures are virtually absent, and punctuation is poorly managed, often using lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences and after full stops. Frequent errors cause noticeable strain for the reader. This performance firmly sits at Band 4.0.
