Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given line graph illustrates the data of people who took part in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that numbers of participants for table tennis had increased significantly, although film club had majority of people to perform it remained almost similar for two decades.
At the beginning of the period the two activities which had less than 30 participants were amateur dramatics and table tennis. However, this data for amateur dramatics, dramatically decreased to 10 with each time period. On the other hand, numbers of people for table tennis raised from 20 in 2010 to 2020 and reached more than 50.
Moreover, for musical performances people started taking part in 2005, which was near the baseline and jumped to 20 in next five years then kept growing. Most of the participants numbers were around 38 in 2000 which remained almost same with some fluctuations till 2020. The activity with highest number of performers was film club with nearly 65 to 70 people in each time period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. An overview is successfully attempted in the second paragraph, identifying the main trends such as the significant increase in table tennis and the steady dominance of the film club. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting specific figures, such as stating that amateur dramatics dramatically decreased to 10 when the final data point for 2020 is actually 6, and misinterpreting the starting figure and trends for martial arts. Despite these minor data discrepancies, the key trends and overall comparison goals of the task are adequately met, corresponding to Band 6.0 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then detailing specific body paragraphs for the different activities. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. However, referencing and progression are occasionally clunky or confusing, particularly in sentences like 'this data for amateur dramatics, dramatically decreased to 10 with each time period' and the awkward tracking of the martial arts figures in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs sometimes falters, placing this text firmly at a Band 6.0 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends with terms such as 'increased significantly', 'dramatically decreased', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are notable limitations and awkward collocations, such as 'people to perform it' instead of 'attending it', and 'participants numbers' instead of 'participation numbers'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but inaccuracies in word choice and word form (e.g., 'raised' instead of 'rose') prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points but contains noticeable errors, fitting the Band 6.0 criteria.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('although film club had majority of people to perform it remained almost similar'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the numbers of participants', 'had majority of people'), tense inconsistencies ('had increased', 'remained'), and incorrect verb choices ('raised' instead of 'rose'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a Band 7.0. Control over grammar is moderate, aligning well with Band 6.0 descriptors.
