Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the main trends and selecting key data points to report and compare. The response notes that film club and martial arts remained relatively constant, while musical performances and table tennis increased and amateur dramatics declined. However, the text suffers from a major negative impact due to length: the response contains only 139 words, falling short of the mandatory 150-word minimum requirement. Furthermore, the response cuts off abruptly at the end with an incomplete sentence ('Other activities including film club and'), and there are a few minor factual inaccuracies in reading the graph (e.g., musical performances started at zero in 2000 and 2005, but the text states 'musical performances was was constant between 2000 and 2005', whereas it was non-existent or at zero). Due to the under-length penalty and incomplete conclusion, Task Achievement is constrained.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a clear overall structure, beginning with an introductory sentence, followed by an overview paragraph, and then body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to link ideas, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Although'. However, paragraphing is disrupted by the incomplete ending and the sudden cut-off of the final sentence, which leaves the essay structurally unfinished. Reference words are occasionally clumsy, such as 'this figures' (instead of 'these figures') and 'This values' (instead of 'These values'). While the logical progression of ideas within the body is generally understandable, the lack of a proper conclusion and the truncated final sentence prevent the cohesion from being fully effective.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing words and phrases related to data trends such as 'contrasting trends', 'declined', 'gradually', 'substantially', and 'peak'. However, there are notable lexical errors and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'amateur dynamics' (instead of 'amateur dramatics') and 'paricipants' (misspelling of participants). The repetition of grammatical errors affecting noun-determiner agreement ('this figures', 'This values') also slightly detracts from lexical precision. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main features of the graph, though it stops short of higher bands due to inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses using words like 'while', 'although', and 'where'. There are, however, several grammatical and mechanical errors. Examples include double-word repetition ('was was constant'), pluralisation errors ('this figures' and 'This values' modifying plural nouns with singular determiners), and preposition misuse ('In contrary' instead of 'In contrast' or 'Conversely'). The most significant issue is that the text is unfinished, terminating mid-sentence. While the individual sentence forms attempted show some variety, the frequency of errors and the incomplete nature of the writing restrict the grammar score.
