Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all major parts of the task by reporting on the different activities shown in the line chart over the twenty-year period. An overview is attempted, identifying the five activities and highlighting the film club's dominant position. However, some of the specific data points and trends described contain inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For instance, the student states that musical performances commenced in 2005, whereas the chart shows them starting at zero in 2005 and reaching 12 in 2010. Similarly, the description of amateur dramatics declining significantly in 2005 is slightly misaligned with the actual trajectory. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of complete data precision and under-developed comparisons place this in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into four paragraphs, providing a logical overall structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs discussing specific trends. However, the progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by mechanical or awkward transitions, such as 'Subsequently ,' and 'Futhermore, martial arts'. Cohesive devices are sometimes overused or awkwardly placed, and punctuation errors around commas detract from smooth flow. Referencing between ideas is generally clear enough to follow, but paragraphing could be managed more effectively to group related trends together, resulting in a cohesive score of 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'plateaued', 'fluctuations', 'commenced', and 'boomed'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For example, 'competitors' is used instead of 'participants', 'music perfomances' contains a spelling error, 'remined' is misspelled, and 'increment' is used where 'increase' or 'rise' would be more natural. These vocabulary and spelling errors occur regularly, though they do not completely impede communication, pointing solidly to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and coordinating conjunctions. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, spacing before punctuation marks, and word forms. Examples include spacing issues around commas ('Overall ,'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing such as 'Film club remained plateaued however there were only minor fluctuations'. There are also run-on clauses and punctuation inconsistencies. While simple sentences are generally understandable, complex structures are frequently faulty, reflecting the descriptors for Band 5.0.
