Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and reporting the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the line graph. The overview captures the dominant trend of the film club and the significant growth of table tennis. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the initial and final figures for table tennis and the film club. However, there are some minor inaccuracies or slight misreadings of the data; for instance, the student states that amateur dramatics 'raised by the end of the period', whereas the graph clearly shows a sharp decline from 26 down to 6 participants. Furthermore, some figures are slightly imprecise. Nevertheless, the response covers all required aspects and satisfies the task requirements effectively, earning a Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'Looking at the data', and 'Turning to the remaining activities' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific data points. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs stumbles slightly due to minor grammatical issues. Overall cohesion is coherent and allows for smooth progression, aligning well with the Band 6.5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'considerable growth', 'fluctuated slightly', and 'declined drastically'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations. For example, the student writes 'on social centre' instead of 'one social centre', uses 'raised' instead of 'rose' multiple times, and incorrectly claims that amateur dramatics 'stood at medium'. Spelling is generally accurate, but word choice errors limit precision. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The candidate attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating conjunctions such as 'despite reducing' and 'although the figure for'. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with tense consistency and verb forms. For instance, the intransitive verb 'rise' is repeatedly used incorrectly as 'raised' ('it raised by the end', 'it raised slightly'), and prepositions or articles are sometimes mishandled ('at on social centre', 'in middle of the time period'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and simple sentences are generally accurate, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
