Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task by providing a clear and comprehensive summary of the provided line graph. The overview accurately highlights the main trends, noting that film club, table tennis, and musical performances experienced growth while amateur dramatics declined. Key features and appropriate comparisons are made, such as identifying film club and table tennis as the prominent activities at the end of the period, and noting the starting point of musical performances. The data points cited, such as table tennis reaching approximately 54 in 2020 and amateur dramatics bottoming out at 6, are accurate and supported by the visual data. The response meets all requirements for a well-structured Task 1 report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The text is logically organised with a clear progression throughout. The response begins with an introductory sentence, moves into a well-crafted overview paragraph, and then breaks down the specific data points logically by activity across subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and without being mechanical, such as 'Looking first at film club', 'As for martial arts', and 'Turning to the amateur dramatics'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different groups of data, ensuring the reader can easily follow the narrative and comparisons presented in the graph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to a task reporting visual data. Phrases such as 'upward trajectory', 'opposite pattern', 'bottomed out', and 'remaining stable' show flexibility and precision. Word choices are generally appropriate and collocation is natural, as seen in 'climbed sharply' and 'increased moderately'. While there are no major lexical errors, the vocabulary remains fairly standard for this type of task, preventing it from reaching the highest bands which require more sophisticated and uncommon lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating various dependent clauses and introductory phrases effectively (e.g., 'Before increasing gradually to nearly 65', 'With regard to musical performances, the figure remained stable...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and control over grammar and punctuation is strong. Minor slips, such as the slightly unnatural phrasing in 'then it bottomed out to around 7', do not impede communication at all. The grammatical range is fully sufficient for this task.
