Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the main trends and selecting relevant data to report and compare across the five activities. The introduction paraphrases the prompt effectively, and the overview highlights the general increase in participation and the prominence of the film club alongside the decline in amateur dramatics. Key figures are reported accurately, such as table tennis rising significantly from 16 in 2000 to 53 in 2020. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some data points (e.g., stating the film club was 65 in 2000 when the visual shows 64, and reporting 68 instead of 66 for 2020). Despite these minor misreadings of the gridlines, the response successfully addresses all requirements of Academic Task 1, earning a solid Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs grouping the activities logically. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, with phrases like 'Overall, it is apparent', 'In 2000', 'Meanwhile', and 'Turning to the remaining activities'. However, there are some minor mechanical errors and punctuation lapses in cohesion, such as the dangling clause 'Followed by , a further fall to 14 in 2015' and the awkward transition 'While, a film club's proportion shows the highest figures over the period. Whereas, the Amateur dramatic represents declined.' These formatting and punctuation slips slightly disrupt the flow, but overall logical organisation and progression remain clear throughout, placing this response comfortably at Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing graphical data, successfully employing terms like 'fluctuated', 'declined slightly', 'rose', and 'significantly'. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'proportion', 'participants', and 'activities'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'who participant in' (should be participating), 'a film club's proportion' (not a proportion of a total), and 'Amateur dramatic represents declined' (incorrect grammatical category and noun usage). Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical errors prevent the score from reaching Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 a fair and accurate reflection of the vocabulary range and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinate clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'Although the number of Martial arts fluctuated the period, falling from 36 in 2000 to 32 in 2005...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are noticeable errors such as 'who participant' (tense/form error), missing prepositions ('at social center' instead of at a social centre), missing words in 'fluctuated [over] the period', and fragment sentences like 'Followed by , a further fall to 14 in 2015 and just 7 in 2020.' While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.5, aligning it well with Band 6.0.
