Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the graph. An adequate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key trends such as the steady increase in table tennis, the fluctuation in martial arts, and the stability of the film club. The main features are supported with appropriate data points, such as mentioning that table tennis started at just under 20 and reached nearly 60 in 2020. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting specific figures, such as stating martial arts 'started from just 40 in 2000' when it was actually 36, and stating musical performances started in 2005 when the axis shows data starting at 2000 with a value of 0. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of Task 1 well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized logically with clear paragraphs separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Initially', 'Turning to other categories', and 'In contrast'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on specific activities. While referencing is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the progression within sentences occasionally stumbles due to grammatical lapses, such as in the sentence starting with 'In contrast, Amateur dramatics...'. Nevertheless, the overarching arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a Task 1 response, successfully employing terms like 'steadily increased', 'considerable fluctuation', 'remain stable', and 'rose sharply'. There are occasional awkward phrasings or word choice inaccuracies, such as 'film club remained relatively stable in the figure' and 'reach in under 40'. Spelling is generally accurate, and despite minor lexical limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using temporal clauses and comparative phrases such as 'whereas film club remained relatively stable' and 'before rising sharply to reach nearly just under 60'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, leading to several errors and awkward constructions, such as 'remain stable despite some fluctuation to reach in under 40' and 'it then rise slightly in 2005 then fell sharply'. Punctuation and tense usage also exhibit minor slips. These errors occasionally disrupt the flow, placing the grammar firmly in the Band 6 category.
