The line graph shows how many people took part in five activities at a Melbourne social centre between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, film club stayed the most popular activity throughout, while table tennis and musical performances grew the most. Amateur dramatics, by contrast, declined steadily after 2005.

Table tennis saw the most dramatic change. From about 16 in 2000, it grew slowly to 21 in 2010, then soared to approximately 55 in 2020, overtaking martial arts and amateur dramatics. Musical performances had no participants until 2005, but climbed to about 13 in 2010 and 21 in 2020. Amateur dramatics rose slightly from 26 to 28 in 2005, then fell continuously to only about 8 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and effectively reporting the main features and trends of the five activities. The key data points are accurately identified and supported, such as noting that the film club remained the most popular throughout and highlighting the dramatic surge in table tennis participation from about 16 in 2000 to approximately 55 in 2020. Comparisons are made appropriately across the categories. The response is fully developed and satisfies the requirements of Task 1 well, aligning with Band 8 descriptors for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Information and ideas are logically sequenced with a clear overall progression throughout the response. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to specific groupings of trends or individual activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'by contrast', 'then', and 'From about 16 in 2000' are managed well to guide the reader through the data without obtrusiveness. Referencing is clear, and the logical structure reflects solid organizational control, meeting the criteria for Band 8.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing less common items and functional language such as 'fluctuated slightly', 'dramatic change', 'soared', and 'declined steadily'. Word choices and collocations are generally precise and natural, though some phrases lean toward standard descriptive reporting rather than sophisticated synthesis. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, supporting a clear flow of communication, which aligns well with a Band 7 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating various dependent clauses and participial phrases successfully (e.g., 'Film club began at about 64 participants, dipped to around 60 in 2010, then rose to roughly 67 in 2020'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control over past tense narrative structures for temporal data is strong. Punctuation is accurate, and minor slips are extremely rare, justifying a Band 8 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
