Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the five activities over the 20-year period. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting that Film club remained the most popular while noting significant shifts such as table tennis rising to second place and amateur dramatics declining. Key data points are accurately cited from the chart, including starting and ending figures (e.g., amateur dramatics starting at 25 and ending just below 10, and table tennis rising dramatically to 54 in 2020). The response is well-structured and covers all necessary details without major omissions, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to contrasting trends. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'later', and 'overall' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, although some transitional phrasing is slightly repetitive or mechanical (e.g., 'later it rose significantly'). Referencing between sentences is generally clear, and paragraphing is managed appropriately to group related activities together, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, attempting less common items such as 'fluctuations', 'significantly', and 'dramatically'. However, there are some minor word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'muscial' instead of 'musical' and treating 'martials' as a noun for martial arts participants. Collocations are generally functional, though slightly awkward in places (e.g., 'crossed martials'). The lexical range provides enough flexibility and precision to communicate the main trends clearly, supporting a Band 6.5 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and time markers (e.g., 'where table tennis crossed it and became the second highest sport'). There are some grammatical errors and run-on structures, such as comma splices ('...at 20 participants than it rose dramatically...'). Articles and prepositions also contain occasional lapses ('at social center', 'end at just below 10'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the majority of simple structures are accurate, warranting a Band 6.0.
