Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key features and comparisons from the graph. The overview clearly identifies the highest and lowest points (Film club and Musical performances, respectively) and notes general trends. The body paragraphs effectively report specific data points, such as the peak of the Film club at around 65-68 members, the stable trend in Martial arts, and the contrasting trajectories of Table tennis (rising sharply to around 54-55) and Amateur dramatics (dropping to 5). While some phrasing is slightly awkward (e.g. 'two opposite breakthrough points in the middle of the year'), the overall response satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement at a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level, appropriately presenting and highlighting the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall logical arrangement, moving from an introduction to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although some transitions and referencing could be smoother. For instance, phrases like 'However, Amateur dramatics enrollment went down steadily' and 'Moreover, the people started to take part' demonstrate adequate cohesion, but occasional mechanical or abrupt shifts occur between sentences. Paragraphs are distinguishable, and the logical progression is maintained throughout the text, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'participation', 'enrollment', 'marginally stable', and 'dramatically'. There are attempts at less common lexical items, although some word choices and collocations are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'various sports activity held' (instead of activities, and not all are strictly sports, e.g. film club) and 'breakthrough points'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student demonstrates control over basic sentence structures and attempts complex clauses, such as 'The given line chart provides information about various sports activity held at one social centre...' and 'While a significant number...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including missing articles ('in Film club activity', 'number rose') and prepositions ('in the middle of the year' instead of over the period). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, supporting a Band 6.0 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
