Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key parts of the prompt, successfully reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, correctly identifying the film club as consistently having the highest numbers and amateur dramatics experiencing a significant decline. Specific data points are cited to support the descriptions, such as table tennis rising from 16 to 54. While some figures contain minor discrepancies compared to the visual reference (for instance, stating table tennis reached 55 and musical performances began in 2005 when the data shows 0), these do not detract from the overall accuracy of the trends. The task is well-addressed overall, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a clear logical progression throughout, with a logical arrangement of paragraphs separating the introduction, overview, and individual body paragraphs detailing the categories. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'At last'. However, referencing and paragraph internal cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly disjointed, as seen with transitions like 'Martial arts faced ups and down'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the analysis. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for a Band 6.5, providing a coherent and generally smooth progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data trends such as 'fluctuated', 'rose significantly', and 'dropped'. However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'paritcipants' instead of participants, 'raised' instead of rose, and awkward phrasing like 'consisted with a lot of individuals'. Less common items are attempted with mixed success, reflecting some awareness of style but lacking consistent precision. Because these vocabulary errors do not impede communication, the response comfortably fits into the Band 6.0 category for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of individuals in table tennis were'), tense confusion ('musical performance took place in 2005 with no participants at the beginning... and consequently reached less than 20'), and preposition errors ('faced ups and down'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from grammatical accuracy, they rarely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors corresponds to a Band 6.0.
