Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, highlighting the Film club as the leader and contrasting it with Musical performances starting later with fewer participants. However, some of the data points reported contain inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For instance, the student states the Film club started with 65 and ended at 70, whereas the graph indicates 64 and 66 respectively, and mentions Musical performances ended at 15 rather than approximately 18. Despite these minor data inaccuracies, the main trends—such as the dramatic rise of Table tennis and the decline of Amateur dramatics—are correctly identified and supported with figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is arranged into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Ideas are generally logically sequenced, following a clear division of information. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with abrupt transitions and awkward referencing. For example, expressions like 'on the other hand Musical performances started after 5 years later' lack smooth integration. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within the third paragraph is cluttered due to dense grouping of multiple activities without adequate signposting.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'surpassed', 'drastically', and 'static'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'contestants' instead of 'participants', 'small deep' instead of 'dip', 'materials arts' instead of 'martial arts', 'incept' instead of 'began' or 'commenced', and 'take handsome numbers'. These lexical errors and awkward phrasings occasionally impede communication, placing the response firmly in the Band 5 to 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing capitalization ('in the year 2000'), tense inconsistencies ('starts', 'looking', 'conclude'), preposition errors ('starts after 5 years', 'started from 2005'), and malformed relative clauses ('where Film club looking the top'). Furthermore, punctuation is weak, with run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the frequency of errors restricts the grammar score.
