Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers all main features and trends of the provided graph over the 2000 to 2020 period. The overview clearly highlights the overall trends, such as the film club consistently maintaining the highest participation and the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics. The body paragraphs successfully report specific data points, such as the film club starting at around 64 and ending at 66, and table tennis growing significantly from 16 to 54. While there are minor approximations in reading the exact figures (which is fully acceptable given the visual nature of line graphs), the task is thoroughly addressed with relevant data comparisons throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised, beginning with a clear introduction, followed by a well-defined overview paragraph, and concluding with detailed body paragraphs. Ideas progress logically from general trends to specific data details. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'In contrast', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct categories of information, contributing to a clear and coherent overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, employing appropriate reporting language such as 'significant growth', 'steady decline', and 'plummeted significantly'. Less common lexical items are attempted with general success, such as 'fluctuation' and 'approximately'. Although there are minor awkward phrasings like 'placed after a certain years' instead of 'appeared after a few years', the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise trends and comparisons without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'having no people from 2000 to 2005, musical performances started...'). Grammatical control is generally strong, with many error-free sentences. There are minor slips in punctuation or preposition usage, such as 'in in 2005' and 'remained almost same', but these errors do not impede communication and allow the text to flow smoothly.
