Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features and making relevant comparisons across the categories. An overview is provided, highlighting that the film club recorded the highest participation overall while amateur dramatics saw the least. Key data points are cited correctly, such as the film club starting at around 64 in 2000 and finishing at 66, and table tennis showing a dramatic increase from 16 to around 54. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some of the specific figures reported, such as claiming musical performances reached 14 participants in 2020 when the graph shows approximately 18. Overall, the task is well covered with clear trends identified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs breaking down the categories. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Meanwhile', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, paragraphing could be slightly more balanced, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing and progression within sentences remain generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, employing words and phrases such as 'participated', 'minimally increased', 'dramatically increased', and 'declined sharply'. There are occasional slight inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'people started to participate and increased sharply and reached to 14 participants', where preposition usage ('reached to') is flawed. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main trends effectively, though it stops short of a wider, highly flexible range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
A mix of simple and complex sentence structures is used throughout the response, such as subordinate clauses introduced by 'while' and 'however'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, particularly with prepositions and verb forms, such as 'reached to only 5 participants' and 'music performances' instead of 'musical performances'. Punctuation is generally fine, and these errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score due to a lack of consistent error-free complex sentences.
