Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses the prompt by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the five activities over the period from 2000 to 2020. An overview is provided in the second paragraph and reiterated in the conclusion, highlighting key trends such as the film club's dominance and the significant growth of table tennis. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the film club having the highest participation and musical performances starting at zero in 2000 before reaching 18 by 2020. However, the summary tends to list data points sequentially rather than fully synthesising comparisons across all categories, which prevents it from reaching a higher band. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview/body paragraph, and a concluding paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'On the contrary', and 'In conclusion'. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak, as the introductory overview and body details are merged into a single large paragraph before the conclusion. Additionally, referencing and logical progression occasionally feel mechanical, as seen in the repetition between the second and third paragraphs where similar trends are restated. Nonetheless, the overall progression is discernible and the response remains coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms such as 'participated', 'gradually increased', 'significant growth', and 'upward trajectory'. However, there are several spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including 'Melnourne' instead of Melbourne, 'Austalia' instead of Australia, 'flactuauted' instead of fluctuated, 'ameteur' instead of amateur, and 'ametur' instead of amateur. Furthermore, vocabulary choice tends to rely on basic or repetitive phrasing ('experienced significant growth', 'experienced the downward trajectory'), limiting the lexical score to a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The line graph demonstrates the data of the participants who participated in wide range of activities...' and 'On the contrary, the number of participants registered for martial arts flactuauted over the time span of two decades.' Grammatical accuracy is mixed; there are missing articles ('in wide range', 'with most participants') and frequent spelling errors. While complex sentences are attempted, errors are noticeable and recurrent, although they do not severely impede overall communication. Control over punctuation is generally acceptable.
