Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the information about number of individuals participating in five distinct social activities( film club, table tennis, musical performances, martial arts and Amateur dramatics) in one Australian region, Melbourne between 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity through-out the period, while, table tennis experienced the dramatic growth. By contrast, Amateur dramatics declined sharply and became the least popular activity at the end of period. Moreover, martial arts represented the modest change over the time, followed by musical performances increased gradually after being introduced.

In 2000, around 64 people contributed significantly in film club and made it the most demanding social activity, however, its value slightly decrease to 60 in 2010, thereafter recovering about 65 people in 2015 to 67 in 2020. By contrast, approximately 18 individuals took part in table tennis, followed by slight increase in 2010 and reached its peak in 2020 to around 57 people. No one took part in musical instrument at that time. While remaining activities like martial arts and Amateur dramatics recorded 37 and 17 people respectively.

Regarding 2020, film club remained popular among individual, followed by second most demanding activity, table tennis attracted 58 people in 2020. By contrast, the value of Amateur dramatics fell dramatically thereafter, consequently reached its lowest value to 4 people in 2020. Martial arts fluctuated modestly, dropping to about 32 people in 2005 and then rising to 38 in 2010 and again stood at the value of 38 by the end of twenty years period. The figure of people for musical instruments represented the considerable growth and rose from around 0 in 2015 to 19 people in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task by reporting the main features, selecting appropriate data points, and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. The overview clearly highlights the overarching trends, such as the film club remaining most popular, table tennis experiencing dramatic growth, and amateur dramatics declining sharply. Figures cited, such as the film club starting at 64 and table tennis rising to 54-58, generally align well with the provided visual data. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some of the specific year-by-year numbers (for instance, stating table tennis started at around 18 in 2000 when it was actually 16, and minor confusions in body paragraphs regarding specific starting years). Despite these minor data-reading slips, the overall task response is well-developed, comprehensive, and meets the criteria for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. An introductory paragraph is followed by a distinct overview and two body paragraphs that detail the trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, employing transition words like 'Overall', 'By contrast', 'Moreover', and 'Regarding 2020'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points. However, some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive, and a few cohesive links feel a bit mechanical ('Regarding 2020' used as a subject heading). Overall organisation is clear, supporting a Band 7 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to an academic task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'participating', 'dramatic growth', 'declined sharply', and 'fluctuated modestly'. There are several word choice and collocation slips, such as 'number of individuals participating in... one Australian region, Melbourne', 'demanding social activity' instead of popular, and 'musical instrument' instead of 'musical performances'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing feels slightly unnatural or imprecise ('value of Amateur dramatics'). The lexical range is sufficient for flexibility and precision in places, fitting comfortably into Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 due to recurring collocation awkwardness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and comparative forms ('while table tennis experienced the dramatic growth', 'dropping to about 32 people in 2005 and then rising to 38'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout, such as 'illustrates the information about number' (missing article), 'followed by musical performances increased gradually' (faulty subordinate clause structure), and tense inconsistencies ('its value slightly decrease' instead of decreased). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but errors in verb forms and prepositions persist. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in Band 6.
