Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons across the five activities shown in the line graph. An effective overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the overall trends correctly (e.g., the film club remaining the most popular, table tennis experiencing dramatic growth, and amateur dramatics declining sharply). Data points and figures are generally reported accurately and correspond well to the visual source, such as the peak of table tennis and the steady nature of martial arts. The response is fully developed and well-focused on the prompt, meeting all requirements for Task Achievement at a high standard.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paraphrase, moves into a well-crafted overview paragraph, and then follows up with detailed body paragraphs broken down by trends and years. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'while', 'By contrast', and 'consequently' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although there is a slight mechanical feel to some of the transitions between data points. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to a coherent and easy-to-follow text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, including less common lexical items such as 'participating', 'dramatic growth', 'declined sharply', and 'fluctuated modestly'. There are, however, some minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'musical instrument' instead of 'musical performances', 'demanding' used in place of 'popular', and minor prepositional slips like 'through-out'. Despite these occasional errors, the lexical range is sufficient to convey meaning with flexibility and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'after being introduced', 'dropping to about 32 people in 2005'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, such as 'illustrates the information about number of individuals' (missing article), 'followed by musical performances increased gradually' (awkward coordination of verbs), and 'film club remained popular among individual' (singular instead of plural). However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences demonstrate good control.
