IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates changes in the number of participants across different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, including the film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances, over the period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the figures followed varying trends over the given period, with some activities increasing, while others declined or remained stable. The film club recorded the highest figure, whereas amateur dramatics had the lowest figure. However, amateur dramatics fell dramatically, while table tennis increased significantly over the period.
Looking at the details, the number of participants in the film club remained relatively stable at the beginning and end of the period. Moreover, amateur dramatics stood at approximately 28 participants in 2000 and then fell dramatically to roughly 5 participants in 2020. Furthermore, musical performances started at 1 participants in 2005 and increased continuously to approximately 19 participants by the end of the period.
The number of participants in martial arts remained relatively stable at the beginning and end of the period. Moreover, table tennis stood at roughly 18 participants in 2000 and increased continuously to approximately 20 participants in 2010 and then rose sharply to nearly 55 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has successfully covered all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the general trends and extremes, such as the film club recording the highest figure and amateur dramatics having the lowest. Key data points are cited accurately, such as the dramatic fall in amateur dramatics and the significant rise in table tennis. The figures are generally well-selected and reflect the visual data faithfully, demonstrating a clear understanding of the graph without unnecessary listing of every single data point. Therefore, the response fully satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression from the introduction to the overview and subsequent body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Looking at the details', and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, dividing the different categories logically. Although some cohesive links like 'Moreover' are repeated frequently across paragraphs, they do not disrupt the overall flow or clarity of the text. Referencing is clear and accurate throughout, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparisons made between the different activities.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Phrases like 'remained relatively stable', 'fell dramatically', and 'increased continuously' show a good grasp of trend language. However, there are minor slips in precision and collocation, such as 'started at 1 participants' (which contains a grammatical error in number agreement alongside lexical usage). While less common lexical items are attempted, they remain fairly standard. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information precisely, but lacks the wider, more sophisticated flexibility required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. Complex forms are employed effectively in sentences such as 'The line graph illustrates changes in the number of participants across different activities... over the period from 2000 to 2020.' Most sentences are grammatically sound, though there is a noticeable grammatical error in the phrase 'started at 1 participants', where the noun does not agree with the cardinal number. Punctuation is accurate, and despite occasional minor errors, communication is never impeded. The majority of sentences are error-free.
