Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and notable comparisons across the five activities shown in the chart. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the general patterns such as the film club recording the highest participation and the dramatic shifts seen in amateur dramatics and table tennis. Key data points are accurately cited, such as amateur dramatics dropping from approximately 28 to roughly 5, and table tennis rising sharply to nearly 55. The response is fully developed, accurate in its data reporting, and addresses the prompt comprehensively without significant omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections covering the overall trends and specific details. Cohesive devices are employed effectively to connect ideas, such as "Overall, it is evident", "Looking at the details", and "Moreover". Although referencing and transitions are generally well managed, occasional repetitive sentence openings keep this criterion at a strong Band 7 rather than reaching full mastery.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task 1 response. Phrases like "remained relatively stable", "fell dramatically", and "increased continuously" show a good ability to describe trends effectively. Less common vocabulary items are attempted with reasonable success, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as referring to "0 participant" (which should be plural). Communication is clear and fluent throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
A good mix of simple and complex sentence structures is used throughout the response, including relative clauses and subordinate constructions (e.g., "including the film club... over the period from 2000 to 2020"). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, with good control over tense usage when describing past trends. While occasional minor errors appear, such as noun count issues, they do not impede communication, demonstrating a solid command of grammar and punctuation.
