Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of people participating in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, over a twenty-year period from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is clear that Film club was consistently the most popular activity throughout the entire period, while Table tennis experienced the most dramatic growth. Conversely, Amateur dramatics was the only activity that witnessed a significant downward trend.

Looking at the details, the Film club attendance fluctuated slightly but remained high, starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at a peak of nearly 66 in 2020. Table tennis started as one of the least popular activities with only about 16 participants, but its numbers experienced a sharp increase, climbing exponentially after 2010 to reach 54 by the end of the period. Musical performances did not exist for the first 5 years but grew steadily from 2005 onward, reaching just under 20 participants by 2020.

In stark contrast, the number of people doing Martial arts remained relatively stable, hovering around 35 participants over the two decades despite minor fluctuations. Meanwhile, Amateur dramatics showed an initial marginal rise to about 28 participants in 2005, but subsequently plunged over the next 15 years, dropping to a low of roughly 7 participants by 2020.

The student has written an excellent response that fully satisfies the requirements of Academic Task 1. The main features and trends of the line graph are accurately identified and reported. For instance, the student correctly highlights that the Film club was consistently the most popular activity and that Table tennis saw the most dramatic growth. Data points are appropriately cited throughout the response, such as 'starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000' for the Film club and reaching '54 by the end of the period' for Table tennis. The overview paragraph successfully captures the overarching trends without getting bogged down in unnecessary numbers. The response is well-structured and covers all categories effectively, demonstrating a fully developed overview and accurate referencing of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with a well-formulated introduction, followed by a concise overview paragraph that outlines the key trends. The body paragraphs are logically grouped, with one paragraph dedicated to the Film club, Table tennis, and Musical performances, and the final paragraph covering Martial arts and Amateur dramatics. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'Conversely', 'Looking at the details', 'Meanwhile', and 'In stark contrast'. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the clarity of the text. There are no issues with referencing or logical flow, making the essay extremely easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a wide and flexible lexical resource suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Less common vocabulary items and phrases are used with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'fluctuated slightly', 'climbing exponentially', 'remained relatively stable', and 'plunged over the next 15 years'. Word choice is precise, and there are virtually no lexical errors. The vocabulary allows the student to convey precise meanings regarding trends and data changes, matching the descriptor for a high band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing exhibits a wide range of complex grammatical structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free. The student successfully employs various clause types and participial phrases, such as 'starting at roughly 64 participants in 2000 and ending at a peak of nearly 66 in 2020' and 'Musical performances did not exist for the first 5 years but grew steadily from 2005 onward'.
