Student answer (Band 6.0)
The labelled graph illustrates numerical data representing participants involved in different activites at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia over the time period of 2 decades spaning from 2000 to 2020. This former centre included several activites coming from diverse categories for instance, film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances.
Over the course of time, film club held the most number of participants and stayed consistent by the end of 2020. This is the only activity where no dramatic change is observed. Similarly, martial arts started off with an average number of participants, around 40 and did not change considerably. On the other hand, table tennis started off low at just 15 but a dramatic rise was observed after the first decade, growing upto 50 participants.
Although amateur dramatics had just 25 participants but over the time period they started leaving this particular activity and the numbers dropped down to zero. Amongst all these only musical performances had no participants but grew drastically in 2010 and now hold 20 of them and being the only activity showcasing a sudden boom.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. An overview is present, highlighting the general trends, such as the film club remaining the most popular and table tennis experiencing a dramatic rise. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting specific figures; for instance, the student states that amateur dramatics 'had just 25 participants' (the graph shows 26 in 2000) and that musical performances 'now hold 20 of them' (the actual figure in 2020 is approximately 18). Despite these slight numerical discrepancies, the overall trends and comparisons are adequately covered, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction and body paragraphs that group information by activity or trend. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Similarly', and 'Although' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction from the body details. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'they started leaving this particular activity', which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall arrangement is coherent, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'dramatic rise', 'consistent', and 'drastically'. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'activites' instead of 'activities', 'spaning' instead of 'spanning', and 'upto' instead of 'up to'. Additionally, the phrase 'former centre' is an awkward collocation in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures reasonably well ('Although amateur dramatics had just 25 participants but over the time period...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, notably the redundant use of coordinating conjunctions within subordinate clauses ('Although... but...'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and errors rarely impede communication, allowing the response to secure a Band 6.0.
