Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on several activities from the line graph, such as the film club, amateur dramatics, and table tennis. However, there are significant issues with data accuracy and temporal coverage. First, the introduction states the time period is from 2000 to 2010, whereas the graph spans 2000 to 2020. Furthermore, several data points are misreported or confused; for instance, the text claims amateur dramatics started with 25 participants (actual is 26) and experienced a dramatic fall from 2005 to 2010, and mentions that 'almost 25 participants involved in table tennis... reaching a peak by 55 in 2010' (actual table tennis in 2000 was 16, and it peaked at 54 in 2020). An overall clear overview is missing, and the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, leading to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organization into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression or cohesive structure guiding the reader through the data. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkwardly applied, such as the abrupt transition 'Whereas, Amateur dramatics...' and repetitive use of 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is also erratic, with single-sentence paragraphs breaking up the body of the text. Referencing is occasionally confusing, as pronouns and time markers do not clearly link back to the intended subjects. Consequently, the organization lacks clarity and logical flow, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts to use some task-specific vocabulary, such as 'participants', 'activity', and 'peak', but the range is limited and frequently repetitive. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'most popular activity of the social centre' (missing 'the'), 'dramatic fall of number' (should be 'fall in the number'), 'considerable rose' (should be 'considerable rise'), and 'engaged themelves'. Spelling and word-form errors occur regularly ('almosty', 'themelves'), though they generally do not prevent the reader from grasping the basic subject matter. This demonstrates the characteristics of Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including missing articles ('was most popular activity'), incorrect prepositions, and tense confusion. For example, 'the graph of musical performances shown considerable rose' contains both a verb form error ('shown' instead of 'showed') and a word form error ('rose' instead of 'rise'). Subject-verb agreement and sentence boundary issues also appear, such as in the fragmented and run-on phrasing in the final paragraph. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause some difficulty, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
