Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the graph. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the overall trends of the film club and musical performances. Key comparisons are made throughout, such as noting that table tennis surged to first position by 2020 while amateur dramatics experienced a significant decline. However, there are minor factual inconsistencies in the details; for instance, the student states the film club was 'significantly highest' and 'maintained around 65 to 69 people', whereas the graph shows it dipping slightly to 60 in 2010. Additionally, the phrase 'least favoured sport' is slightly unnatural for activities at a social centre. Overall, the response covers all categories well and satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0, supported by clear, though occasionally imprecise, data reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a generally clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. It starts with an introductory statement, moves into an overview, and then details specific activities across the body sentences. Cohesive devices and transition words are used, such as 'Overall', 'Though', and 'However', although referencing is occasionally repetitive or clunky ('Table tennis players... however it rose sharply... Table tennis also experienced...'). Paragraphing is somewhat underdeveloped; the body of the text runs together with several short or disjointed sentences rather than being clearly divided into distinct thematic paragraphs. Furthermore, punctuation and sentence boundaries are occasionally mishandled, which affects the smoothness of reading. These features place the response firmly in Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'participated', 'consistently', 'surpassed', and 'surged'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors ('insiginificant', 'flactuation', 'continously', 'compared amateur dramatics' instead of 'compared to amateur dramatics') and awkward word choices ('least favoured sport'). While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the response from achieving a higher band. The use of repetitive vocabulary structures ('number of people', 'participation') also limits the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing dependent clauses introduced by 'Though' and 'when'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing prepositions ('compared amateur dramatics', 'placing it on first position' instead of 'in first position'), subject-verb agreement issues, and punctuation errors including missing commas in complex structures. While many sentences are comprehensible and the errors rarely impede communication, the density of grammatical slips across the relatively short text prevents the assignment of a higher band.
