Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making appropriate comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the stability of the film club, the rise of table tennis, and the decline of dramatic performances. Key figures and trends are accurately captured, such as the film club starting around 64 and ending at 66, and table tennis growing significantly from 16 in 2000 to 54 in 2020. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that musical performances reached an involvement of '20 members' when the peak was around 18. Despite these slight errors, the response satisfies the requirements well, earning a band score of 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement, and information is generally grouped logically by activity and trend. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped: the essay is split into an introduction, an overview combined with a body point, and then a very long final paragraph containing the bulk of the details. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly used, such as 'Dramatics instead of showing increased showed downfall'. Furthermore, referencing and transitions between sentences can be slightly abrupt, impacting the smooth progression of ideas. Because of these structural and cohesive limitations, the response fits the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'fluctuated', 'surpassing', and 'marked markedly' (though with some awkwardness). There are several spelling errors throughout the text, including 'Amateure', 'throught', 'comaprison', 'innvolvement', 'rosed', and 'intrest'. Word choice and collocations are occasionally imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'did not revealed any intrest' and 'accounted for smallest innvolvement'. While communication is not severely impeded, these frequent lexical and spelling errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band, making Band 6 appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with tense consistency, article use, and verb forms (e.g., 'table tennis participants although rosed gradually', 'dramatic change was seen in dramatics that showed continuous decline', and 'no performer was in this till 2005'). Punctuation is also neglected, with missing periods and commas affecting sentence boundaries. These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret certain sentences fully, aligning the grammar score with Band 5.5.
