Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at a social centre in Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is evident that the figures for table tennis and musical performances followed an upward trend, whereas Amateur dramatics moved in the opposite direction. It is also noticeable that film club remained the highest throughout most of the period.

At the beginning of the period, Amateur dramatics stood at approximately 30. It then fell to 18 in 2010. Following this, the figure fell sharply, reaching 8 in 2020. Meanwhile, table tennis followed a opposite pattern, changing from 25 to 55 in 2000 to 2020.

Turning to musical performances, the figure was 0 in 2005 before rising to 10. It subsequently rose, reaching 15 by 2020. In contrast, film club fluctuated from 60 to 65 and martial art fluctuated from 30 to 40 over the same period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the line graph. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the upward trends for table tennis and musical performances versus the downward trend for amateur dramatics, as well as the dominance of the film club. However, there are some inaccuracies in the reported figures. For example, amateur dramatics in 2000 is stated as approximately 30 (actual is around 26), and table tennis in 2000 is stated as 25 (actual is 16). Furthermore, grouping the film club and martial arts fluctuations as '60 to 65' and '30 to 40' oversimplifies the data trajectory. Nevertheless, the main comparative features are successfully conveyed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group related activities effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the categories. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'At the beginning of the period', 'Meanwhile', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical or imprecise, such as 'followed a opposite pattern' or grouping diverse data points together without smoother integration. Overall progression is clear throughout the text, meeting the requirements for this band level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data reporting such as 'upward trend', 'fluctuated', 'rising', and 'fell sharply'. There are some minor lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'followed a opposite pattern' (instead of 'an opposite pattern') and 'martial art' (should be plural 'martial arts' matching the chart). Less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, but spelling and word choices occasionally show slight inaccuracies that do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including dependent clauses ('As the line graph illustrates', 'while amateur dramatics moved in the opposite direction'). There is good control over past tense verbs used for describing historical trends. Grammatical errors are relatively infrequent, though minor issues occur, such as the missing article in 'followed a opposite pattern' and the singular 'martial art' instead of plural. Complex sentences are generally well-managed, and punctuation is accurate, allowing the text to be read easily without disruption.
