IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at a social centre in Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the figures for table tennis and musical performances followed an upward trend, whereas amateur dramatics moved in the opposite direction. It is also noticeable that the film club remained the highest throughout most of the period.
At the beginning of the period, amateur dramatics stood at approximately 30. It then fell to 18 in 2010. Following this, the figure fell sharply, reaching 8 in 2020. Meanwhile, table tennis followed a opposite pattern, changing from 25 to 55 in 2000 to 2020.
Turning to musical performances, the figure was 0 in 2005 before rising to 10. It subsequently rose, reaching 15 by 2020. In contrast, the film club fluctuated from 60 to 65 and the martial art fluctuated from 30 to 40 over the same period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and notable comparisons across the period from 2000 to 2020. The overview effectively captures the upward trends (table tennis, musical performances), the downward trend (amateur dramatics), and the dominant position of the film club. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the drop in amateur dramatics and the growth in table tennis, though some figures contain minor inaccuracies compared to the raw data (e.g., amateur dramatics starting around 26 rather than 30, and table tennis starting around 16 rather than 25). Despite these minor numerical discrepancies, the overall picture and comparative trends are clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organization. It begins with a helpful introduction, moves into a clear overview paragraph, and then splits the body details logically by activity. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, with phrases like 'At the beginning of the period', 'Following this', 'Meanwhile', and 'Turning to musical performances'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the information, although paragraph breaks could be slightly more balanced. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to a coherent arrangement that meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and functional range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to data trends such as 'upward trend', 'fell sharply', 'fluctuated', and 'opposite pattern'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but word choices are sometimes imprecise or awkward, such as 'changing from 25 to 55' when describing a single data progression, and 'the martial art' instead of 'martial arts'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'followed a opposite pattern' (article error) and slight prepositional or tense inconsistencies. However, these errors do not impede understanding, and punctuation is generally correct. The range of structures combined with frequent error-free or minimally flawed sentences aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
