Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all the key trends shown in the graph, presenting data for the film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances over the 20-year period. However, there are minor factual inaccuracies in data reading; for instance, stating that musical performances were introduced in 2005 (when the data clearly starts at zero in 2000 and 2005) and describing amateur dramatics as being introduced in 2005. The overview identifies some general trends correctly, but misidentifies the lowest participation activity. Despite these flaws, the main features and comparisons are highlighted adequately. This fits the criteria for Band 6.0, where all parts of the task are addressed, but some details are under-developed or slightly inaccurate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged into logical paragraphs, starting with an introductory sentence, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or forced. Paragraphing is adequate, but the final body paragraph is quite dense and combines multiple disparate trends without clear sub-grouping, making it slightly harder to follow. Referencing is generally clear, but overall progression within paragraphs lacks seamless cohesion. This performance aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'fluctuate', 'enrollment', 'significant climb', and 'dramatic fall'. However, there are several spelling errors ('particapents', 'performences', 'anticipated' instead of participated, 'mattial' instead of martial) and awkward collocations like 'by 10 folks'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but word choice errors and typos prevent the score from reaching a higher band. This corresponds to a Band 6.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing clauses introduced by 'while', 'as', and conjunctions. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'for period of 20 years' (missing article), 'the number kept on fluctuate' (incorrect verb form), and 'number remained same' (missing article). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they rarely impede overall communication. This matches the Band 6.0 descriptor, which highlights a mix of simple and complex structures with some persistent errors.
