The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The chart illustrates statistics about people taking part in different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, film club was the most popular activity for the people of Melbourne in the last 20 years.
A sharp increase has been recorded in the number of people participating in table tennis while the number of participants in amateur dramatics declined gradually over the years. Turning to the remaining activities, people in film club and martial arts remained relatively stable.
The biggest increase has been noted in players of table tennis that slightly rose from under 20 in 2000 to approximately 20 in 2010 and then sharply increased to just over 50 in 2020. In addition to this, people participating in musical performances also saw an increase from zero till 2005 to just under 20 in 2020. In contrast, participants in amateur dramatics remained stable for the first five years at under 30 but fell to under 10 in 2020. Talking about martial arts, people in martial arts fluctuated over the years and had approximately same number of people in 2000 and 2020 at under 40. Furthermore, film club also had relatively stable participants over the period of 20 years at under 70.
