Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated in five different activities at social canter in Melbourne, Australia between the period from 2000 to 2020. The data is calibrated in number.

Overall, it is evident that the most popular activity throughout the period was film club. In contrast, amateur dramatics experienced sharp decline while table tennis and musical performance shows dramatic growth by the end of the period.

In 2000, around 65 people attended the film club, compared to approximately 35 in martial arts, while around 25 in amateur dramatics. The number in film club fluctuated slightly during the period but reached 67 by 2020. Similarly, participants in martial arts increased negligibly around 37 by the end of the period.

On the other hand, amateur dramatics saw modest fall from around 25 participants in 2000 to nearly less than 10 in 2020. The number in table tennis began with around 15 participant while growing gradually before rising sharply after 2010 and reached above 50 in 2020. Musical performances have no participant at the beginning but rose significantly and stood at above 15 by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an appropriate overview and reporting the main features and trends of the provided graph. The writer correctly identifies the film club as the most popular activity and notes the stark contrasts between the declining trend of amateur dramatics and the significant growth in table tennis and musical performances. Data points are generally cited accurately and support the comparisons made throughout the body paragraphs. There are minor typos in the introductory sentence, such as writing 'social canter' instead of 'centre' and 'between the period from', but the overall reporting of data is clear, well-supported, and meets all requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. It opens with an introduction and overview, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs that logically group the activities by their general trajectory. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately, ensuring each category of data has its own dedicated space. Although referencing and cohesion are occasionally slightly mechanical, the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7.0 descriptor profile.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision when describing trends, using terms such as 'fluctuated slightly', 'modest fall', 'growing gradually', and 'rose significantly'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, though there are minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'increased negligibly around 37' and 'near less than 10'. Spelling and word choice errors are present ('canter' instead of 'centre', 'participant' instead of 'participants'), but these do not impede communication. This performance aligns well with the criteria for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures appropriately ('The line graph illustrates the number of people who participated...', 'while table tennis and musical performance shows dramatic growth'). There are several grammatical errors and lapses in agreement, such as 'performance shows' instead of 'performances show', missing articles ('at social canter', 'with around 15 participant'), and awkward prepositional phrases ('increased negligibly around 37'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the punctuation is generally well managed, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors.
