Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates changes in the number of participants across five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, including the film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performance, over the period from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is evident that the figures followed varying trends over the given period, with some activities increasing, while others declined or fluctuated. The film club recorded the highest figure over the period, whereas amateur dramatics had the lowest figure. However, amateur dramatics decreased by the end of the period.

Looking at the details, the film club remained relatively stable at the beginning and end of the period. Moreover, table tennis stood at approximately 17 participants in 2000 and increased gradually to roughly 20 participants in 2010, and then increased continuously to nearly 53 participants by the end of the period.

In 2000,  amateur dramatics started at around 26 participants, after which it fell dramatically to a level in the region of 5 participants in 2020. Furthermore, martial arts remained relatively stable at the beginning and end of the period. Meanwhile, musical  performance started at 1 participant in 2000. Thereafter, it increased steadily to roughly 18 participants by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting general trends and extreme values, such as the film club recording the highest figure and amateur dramatics declining significantly. Key data points are accurately reported, such as the film club remaining stable and table tennis increasing markedly to approximately 53 participants by 2020. The response is fully developed and well-grounded in the provided visual data, meeting all requirements for this criterion effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression from introduction to overview and detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information, such as grouping table tennis and film club details separately from amateur dramatics and musical performance. Cohesive devices are handled well, using transition markers such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the details', 'Moreover', and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader smoothly through the data. Referencing is clear throughout, and information flows logically without mechanical repetition, ensuring a coherent overall arrangement.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data trends such as 'fluctuated', 'decreased dramatically', 'increased gradually', and 'remaining relatively stable'. Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable accuracy, such as 'participants', 'period', and 'figure'. While the range is adequate for expressing comparisons and trends precisely, there are minor instances of repetition regarding verbs of change. However, vocabulary choice is natural and fully adequate for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good variety of sentence structures, mixing simple and complex forms effectively (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates changes...', 'While musical performance started at 1 participant in 2000, thereafter it increased...'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is handled correctly. Control of tense consistency when describing past historical data is well maintained. Only occasional minor awkwardness appears, but overall, grammar and sentence architecture remain strong and do not impede communication.
