Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting general trends and extreme values (such as the film club having the highest participation and amateur dramatics the lowest). Key data points, such as the dramatic drop in amateur dramatics and the significant rise in table tennis, are accurately reported and supported with appropriate figures from the graph. The response fully satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement at a Band 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped coherently, starting with an introductory overview paragraph, followed by a general summary paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs breaking down specific categories. A range of cohesive devices is employed to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Meanwhile'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the essay flows smoothly from one point to the next, fulfilling the criteria for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'relatively stable', 'increased gradually', and 'fell dramatically' show a good awareness of trend-related language. There are occasional slight inaccuracies, such as formatting artifacts like '2000,˜' and a stray period in 'musical. performances', but these do not impede communication. The lexical control is consistent with a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor, leaning towards a solid Band 6.5 due to occasional minor mechanical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and appropriate time markers. Grammatical control is generally strong, with frequent error-free sentences (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates changes in the number of participants...'). While there are minor punctuation issues, such as an orphaned symbol and period near the end of the text, these errors do not impede overall communication. The structure and accuracy reflect the requirements of a Band 7.0.
