IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates changes in the number of participants across five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, including the film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances, over the period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the figures followed varying trends over the given period, with some activities increasing, while others declined or fluctuated. The film club recorded the highest figure over the period, whereas amateur dramatics had the lowest figure. However, amateur dramatics decreased by the end of the period.
Looking at the details, the film club remained relatively stable at the beginning and end of the period. Moreover, table tennis stood at approximately 17 participants in 2000 and increased gradually to roughly 20 participants in 2010, and then increased continuously to nearly 53 participants by the end of the period.
In 2000, amateur dramatics started at around 26 participants, after which it fell dramatically to a level in the region of 5 participants in 2020. Furthermore, martial arts remained relatively stable at the beginning and end of the period. Meanwhile, musical performances started at 1 participant in 2000. Thereafter, it increased steadily to roughly 18 participants by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons across the five activities shown in the graph. An overview is presented in the second paragraph, capturing the main highlights (such as the film club recording the highest figure and amateur dramatics having the lowest). Data points are generally reported accurately, such as the film club remaining stable and table tennis increasing significantly towards the end of the period. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data interpretation, such as stating musical performances started at 1 participant in 2000 when the chart clearly shows 0, and minor discrepancies in specific values. Despite these minor flaws, the response covers all parts of the task well and maintains a clear, data-backed progression, meeting the criteria for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised, with a clear overall progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs grouped logically by activity trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, including transitional phrases such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the details', and 'Furthermore'. However, paragraphing could be slightly more balanced, and some cohesive referencing is a bit mechanical. Paragraphs flow well and guide the reader smoothly through the comparative data, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'remain relatively stable', 'increased gradually', and 'fell dramatically'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is repetitive ('beginning and end of the period' is used multiple times). Word choice is generally precise, and spelling is accurate throughout, supporting a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates changes... including the film club..., over the period from 2000 to 2020.'). Grammatical accuracy is fairly high; the majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well. While the range of complex structures is somewhat standard rather than fully flexible, the control over grammar is strong with only minor slips, aligning comfortably with Band 7.
