Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the categories. An overview is provided, noting that the film club remained dominant while other activities followed different trajectories. However, there are several inaccurate data points and misread figures throughout the text. For instance, the student states that the film club started at 65 participation in 2000 and rose to 60 in 2008, which contains logical contradictions and inaccurate reading of the graph. Furthermore, amateur dramatics is stated to have dropped down to 2 by the end of the period, whereas the graph indicates approximately 6. Despite these inaccuracies, the response addresses the prompt adequately and attempts to outline key trends. Band score corresponds to a level where the task is addressed, but data handling lacks precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific trends, which gives it an overall coherent structure. Logical connectors such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the figures', 'In contrast', and 'Turning to' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression within sentences can feel mechanical or disjointed, such as in the sentence beginning with 'In contrast, Table tennis began at nearly 18 pupils in 2000 it remained consant in 2010...'. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response, though internal cohesion needs smoother execution.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'participants', 'activities', 'trajectory', 'trend', and 'fluctuated'. However, there are numerous lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'number of praticipate' instead of 'number of participants', 'differnet' (spelling error), 'number of pupils particpated', and 'second-lowest trend'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word choice and spelling occur frequently throughout the response. The range is minimally sufficient to convey the general message, but control over word formation and collocation needs improvement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory participial phrases ('Looking at the figures', 'Turning to musical performance') and comparative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and clause structuring. Examples of errors include run-on structures like 'Table tennis began at nearly 18 pupils in 2000 it remained consant in 2010', missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing ('Amateur dramatics was nearly 28 pupils in 2000 it dropped down...'). These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band, though basic meaning remains understandable.
