Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting on several activities from the graph. However, there are significant issues with data interpretation and accuracy. For instance, the writer reports that in 2000 the highest number of participants was '65%' in the film club, misreading the vertical axis unit (which represents absolute numbers up to 70, not percentages). Additionally, the overview is extremely basic and repetitive, merely echoing the prompt rather than synthesizing the main trends. While some trends are mentioned, such as the rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, the overall task response lacks precision and clear comparative analysis, landing the response firmly in band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into four paragraphs, which shows an attempt at structuring an Academic Task 1 response. However, the progression within and between paragraphs is awkward. The second paragraph essentially repeats the introduction without adding substantive value, and transitions between sentences are frequently abrupt or mechanical, using linking words like 'however' and 'furthermore' somewhat incongruously. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are inadequate or overused, leading to a choppy reading experience. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical flow requires considerable improvement, aligning with band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic ideas about the chart, such as 'gradually stay steady', 'sharp rise', and 'gradually decline'. However, there are numerous spelling errors and inaccurate lexical choices, such as 'inforrmation', 'Flim club', 'Martial art' (missing plurals), and writing 'melbourne,Austraila' with uncapitalized and incorrect proper nouns. The student attempts some less common phrases like 'slight fluctuation', but overall the lexical range is limited and imprecise, and repeated errors in word form and spelling occasionally cause strain for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently flawed by missing articles, punctuation errors, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the number of individuals in Table tennis are gradually stay steady'). Run-on sentences and punctuation omissions (such as missing periods or starting sentences with lowercase letters like 'the number of individuals...') detract significantly from accuracy. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, though they generally do not completely obscure the intended meaning.
